Deeper, Deeper

1997 was literally the opening line to A Tale of Two Cities: "It was the best of times; It was the worst of times." There seemed to be a song that year that notated every detail we experienced. October found Kim and me crossing state line after state line after dropping our very young kids off in New Jersey so they could hang out with their grandparents for a couple of weeks. We encountered what seemed to be defeat after defeat during that very long season in life, and there was less than zero hope in sight. Everything from those years is somewhat of a blur, on the rare occasion we are forced to revisit it (which we do now only when absolutely forced to). Not many words were exchanged between us on that trip between the lonely roads of Maryland and Virginia, where this song was born. I sang it over and over, and Kim caught the tune and we sang it together over the next couple days as we charted our destination.

We realized that the most painful circumstances are best bathed in praise, and those miles were paved in what we could never produce: joy! It was God's presence with us in the car those days was what we needed more than anything, and He got us through. This is a very abbreviated version, and the lows went on for a very, very long time. We choose to try to find the good parts, much like you can find washed-up treasures on a beach after a storm.

These short choruses are tokens of what miracles He performed in our darkest places. Our prayer is that they get you through some of those days in your lives as well.
