Cover You

Years ago, Kim and I saw a documentary called, "It Was a Wonderful Life." The story followed several people who were hit by unexpected life events and found themselves homeless. There is often a stereotype associated with homelessness. There is an assumption of alcohol and/or drug abuse, among a myriad of other things. I do not think many people grasp how fast they can find themselves in a similar situation. Many are one paycheck or life-altering event away from something like this. These people were successful, educated, and living what most would consider to be a "normal life" one minute, and they were on the streets the next.

One woman in particular really impacted us. Once in a while, she would sleep in the back of a U-Haul for a couple of days just to feel safe for a few minutes. She described the difficulty in getting cleaned up, eating meals, getting dressed, and pulling herself up to the point where she could attempt to find employment and a solid place to live. She told a story of heartbreaking cycles, and the documentary culminated in revealing she had not made it. She could no longer take the pressures that came with all the loss, and she took her own life.

Kim and I are not strangers to much of this cycle. I am hoping that this song can reach out to people who feel they have had enough and are contemplating taking measures to end things themselves. We can testify to the fact that things can change in a few minutes in the other direction, too. Help can come from unexpected places, and it can get better as fast as it got bad. Do not give up. Keep going. Someone needs something you have to offer. Better days are coming. Your hardships and embarrassments, betrayals, and losses can become the ladder someone else needs to climb out in the future.

As you listen to these words, picture God saying them right to you. Talk to Him, have a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus, and He can show you the way through.
