Faith of a Few

 

"The road to life is narrow, and FEW find it" (paraphrase from Matthew 7).

If there is one thing Kim and I have learned through the years, it is that God can (and does) use the few loaves and fishes to feed a crowd (Matthew 14:17-19). We have learned that the room becomes very empty, the road becomes very deserted, and standing on what you know that you know that you know God has shown you becomes isolating and ostracizing. The path of obedience, as we are told over and over again through Scripture, is very narrow. The following verse has helped us through many an "alone" season:

"Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them (Matthew 18:19-20).

My son and  were discussing Gideon this past week (see Judges 7). Before God gave great victory, He whittled the crowd. Before Jesus raised a dead girl to life, He emptied the room (Luke 8). He eliminated the voices of dissention in the room, then He performed the miracles. Then those miracles affected everyone far and wide.

The things we have seen God do with zero during times it was just the two of us are astounding. It is why we decided years ago we will be as content with one as one million in whatever we strive to do. If God sends it, it is enough.

So if you find yourself feeling very alone, hang in there. Quality trumps quantity, and God will still show up for you even when those you never dreamed would leave, turn and leave you for dead. Be faithful and obedient. Stand firm. The numbers don't matter, the faith does. If God called you, He also will do exactly what He says He will do.
