I Need You, Lord
In Durham, North
Carolina, there’s a notorious bridge that has been nicknamed, “The Can Opener.”
The bridge is a railroad trestle overpass located in a busy section of the
city. Locals call it “The Can Opener” due to the number of drivers who have
tall vehicles that still think they can squeeze under the low overpass. The
signs warn, the flashing lights warn, the warning signals sound, but still there
are hapless drivers that feel they will be exempted from the destruction.
The “Can
Opener” is also known as the “Eleven Foot 8” bridge. That is the clearance.
Anything taller than 11’8” isn't going to clear and is going to peel, or
completely destroy, their vehicle.
There is a
website that features the bridge, and the drivers who challenge the warnings.
They say some try to be fast, some try to argue, but the bridge always wins. Some
cave and heed the warnings and drive a different, safer route.
With Jesus,
there is only one route. You can choose His way or suffer the consequences.
Just like the bridge and physics, He gets the final say.
With Jesus,
we have to humble ourselves, commit our will to His way. We need see that He
knows the way to get us through safely. We can try to sneak by Him, but no one
achieves when attempting to get through.
Jesus says
it clearly. "I am the way and the truth and
the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). We need
to go to Him and tell Him we need Him.
